Solid Hardwood & Engineered Hardwood Top Coat Finishes

When selecting hardwood flooring, homeowners have a handful of wood flooring top coat finishes to choose from that provide varying levels of durability and protection while enhancing the look and luster of the wood grain. If you are considering solid hardwood or engineered hardwood, among the surface finish options that are available, you can get the reflective, high-gloss look or a more subdued, matte finish.

If you are shopping for prefinished or unfinished hardwood flooring, here are several hardwood finishes you have as real options with today’s hardwood brands.

Water-Based Polyurethane

Water-based polyurethane is the most popular surface finish for hardwood flooring, providing a clear finish that gives hardwood a clean look. This durable finish gives hardwood floors that signature, clear, wet look when using a high-gloss polyurethane. For those who prefer a matte finish, water-based polyurethane finishes also come in satin and semi-gloss. Some still prefer the oil-based polyurethanes, but be aware that they can yellow over time.

High-gloss polyurethane hardwood flooring, with its high sheen, makes easy work of the floor cleaning chores; however, flooring imperfections, scratches and everyday debris accumulation do stand out more easily.

Penetrating Oil Sealer

If you are a DIYer, a penetrating oil sealer is a great hardwood top coat finishing choice. Oil sealers do not cure as hard as polyurethanes, but if you’re planning on doing the finishing; this finish also allows you to do touch ups in the future. Oil sealers are sure to give your hardwood floor the beauty it deserves as it brings out the wood grain and the distinct patterns while it enhances the color of the wood.

Penetrating oil sealers are primarily composed of Tung oil. Tung oil is a naturally derived oil that has been in use for thousands of years and while it performs admirably, its effect is not permanent. A floor finished with Tung oil will need to have the finish reapplied every three to five years. While penetrating oil sealers may require more frequent touch ups than other hardwood finishes, its benefit is the natural, low-gloss feel it casts on wood flooring; an ideal look for the more traditional, antique style of home décor.

Swedish Finish (Acid Cured)

A Swedish finish, also known as an acid-cured finish, is extremely durable. A Swedish finish will outperform polyurethane finished floors in durability over the lifespan of a floor. An acid cured finish is ideal for softer woods and smooth textured flooring that can benefit from extra protection.

An acid cured, Swedish finish floor can exhibit high toxicity levels during the curing process and, depending on the relative humidity, the toxicity can linger for a period, from a few days to weeks, and sometimes up to a month.

Aluminum Oxide

The top performing hardwood top coat finish, in terms of durability, is aluminum oxide; available with prefinished hardwood planks. Aluminum oxide finishes on hardwood floors can last up to 25 years. This is a great benefit that translates into less living interruptions because refinishing isn’t necessary as often as with other finishes and it can be especially beneficial if you have an engineered hardwood floor which typically will have thinner, solid wood top veneers that cannot be sanded and refinished as many times as solid hardwoods.

Hard Wax Oil

Hands down, a hard wax oil finish delivers a natural look that’s easy to apply. While providing excellent protection, hard wax oil finishes provide a warm tone appeal. The use of the old technique of hard wax oil finishing decreased over time, but it is becoming popular once again. It’s the perfect choice for homeowners who want a low luster finish that’s easy to touch up. Touch ups, typically, are required every two to three years.
