As accounted to by verifiable test results, the evoke Surge wood composite core flooring surpasses the North American Laminate Flooring Association’s (NALFA) standard definition of waterproof flooring as it has been tested to withstand repeated exposure to standing moisture for over 100 hours with no damage to the floor. The NALFA definition of waterproof indicates a floor is waterproof, if after 24 hours of exposure to standing water, there is no damage to the floor. That means evoke Surge flooring sustains no damage from water when exposed to standing water for a duration of time more than 4 times the industry standard.

How does evoke pull off this superlative feat?

evoke’s innovative design and utilization of today’s advanced flooring technologies gets this job done. The core of the Surge composite core flooring is composed of up to 90% natural wood fiber. This wood fiber comes from sustainable growth forests. Somehow, the wood fibers are custom shaped and they are coated with an organic binding resin, which keeps the fibers from absorbing moisture. That is all good and well, but if the seam between boards isn’t waterproof, your sunk in water. evoke’s Surge flooring has that covered with a flooring Drop & Lock click together joint design that creates a water-tight seal. No moisture penetrates into the floor.

NALFA 24 Hour Laminate Flooring Waterproof Testing
In January 2019 the NALFA established a formal test to measure the effect of standing water on laminate flooring, and to create a standard benchmark for NAFLA member use. The purpose of the standard is to provide customers a validated benchmark against which flooring can be tested, so that when they are shopping for home flooring they can have confidence that laminate flooring samples with a ‘waterproof’ label meet these NAFLA standards and definition.

The NALFA test is set up with stringent oversite and is carried out with a single board of flooring being cut into three pieces and assembled to create a three-way joint. A plastic ring is placed over the joint and sealed to the test flooring surface with a bead of sealant. A measured quantity of water is then poured into the ring and allowed to sit on the flooring surface and on the joint area for 24 hours.

The flooring is examined, immediately following this 24 hour period, first with a visual inspection of the joint area to loof for any damage or delamination of the product visible to the human eye. Then the flooring is inspected with a special device that determines, with a mechanical measurement, any swelling in the flooring. Finally, the flooring is inspected a second time, 24 hours after the water was removed (48 hours after the initial test began) to see if the flooring has recovered, after the 24 hour drying period, to determine if there is any lasting damage. The test results are officially recorded.

NALFA 100 Hour Laminate Flooring Waterproof Testing
The NALFA 100 hour test follows a different scenario. Rather than a single, 24 hour period of exposure to water, the laminate flooring is exposed to standing water for a period of 1 hour every day for 100 days. After each 1 hour exposure period, the sample is dried and visually inspected and mechanically measured.

Following the final 24 hour test period, the sample is given its final inspection and measurement and the results of all the test results are tabulated and summarized. If the final average value for swelling is less than 0.2mm, the product is deemed to have passed the 100 hour test.

According to the NALFA testing, evoke Surge wood composite core flooring provides more than both 24 hours and 100 hours of waterproof protection.
