The Kitchen Table, A Family Staple
The kitchen table. Two simple words. Those two words, for some, can bring back feelings of work. Mothers who traditionally baked homemade bread can associate the kitchen table with the work of rolling out the dough for rye bread or cinnamon rolls. For others, those two words may bring back the memories of conversations, long into the night hours, with friends or relatives who had come to visit for the weekend. For children, those two words may be associated with the warmth and comfort of a secure home that provided the stability of a family they knew they were going to eat dinner with every evening.
Kitchen table. Here at a floor covering store, when in job mode, we tend more to think of those two words in terms of how your kitchen table is going to fit into your home’s décor. Our mind jumps into logistics mode, thinking about how your kitchen table will complement your kitchen or dining room. We begin considering, based upon the size of your kitchen table’s feet and its overall size and weight, about which type of flooring will best stand up under the pressure of your table’s feet against chipping, denting or dimpling. So, the words, kitchen table, can mean different things to different people.
Fellowship & Belonging
At its most basic level, the kitchen table represents fellowship and belonging. Sure, it may serve as the bread dough kneading counter, the relative gathering place, the dinner spot, or the logistical challenge to flooring stores, but all of the purposes for which the kitchen table serves come down to two, deeply embedded, family and community ideals; fellowship and belonging.
The kitchen table is a communal table, a table where people gather to be together. They gather to eat, drink, be merry, and much more. Much of life takes place at the kitchen table; holiday gatherings, special occasions, game nights, and even bandaging a child’s scraped knee. And who doesn’t wake up to the kitchen table to start off the day with a cup of hot coffee, chai tea, or a mug of hot chocolate?
